I kept them for a month to see how well they performed, and the truth is, I made enough off the ad to cover my monthly costs and then some.
Including the adverts has a couple of undesirable effects on my site.
Firstly, the site would load, then a fraction of a second later, the ad banner would appear and shift everything on the page down by a few pixels. This meant that links etc would all shift, so if you load the page and go straight to a link, that would shift down after half a second or so and you would miss the link. Annoying.
Secondly, and most importantly, the ads had a significant impact on my page load times. With the ad enabled, my Page Speed Insight score dropped from 98, down to the mid 70s. In total, it added around half a second of load time to the site. Ain’t no one got time for that!
I take my load times and optimisation seriously, so the advert had to go. My load times are back up to the high 90s on Page Speed Insights and there’s no more shifts after the page loads.
All in all, I’m a happy camper again.
On a side note, if you like what I do on this blog and want to buy me a coffee, I’d be ever so grateful. 🙂
