Making Changes

I’ve been making some changes to the website today. They’re minor, but I’ve been wanting to do them for a while.

Theme Changes

Firstly, I have made the dark version of the site a little darker. Instead of using #333 as the background colour, I’m now using #1e1e1e. This not only gives more contrast between the text and the background, it also looks better, I think. Especially in a dark room.

Code Blocks

Previously I had the Enlighter syntax highlighter plugin installed. While code highlighting is very useful, this is a load of JavaScript I’d rather not include in the site.

Instead, I’ve just gone for a simple background to the code blocks that is either a little lighter, or a little darker than the body background, depending on whether you’re using the dark or light theme.

I’ve also changed the mono font I use in code blocks. Previously I was rendering whatever local monospace font you have installed locally. I’ve replaced that with the Fira Code font. The headers on this site also use Fira, so the new font ties in nicely.

Code blocks now look like this:

code {
    background: #333333;
    padding: 2px 7px 2px 7px;
    border-radius: 5px;
    font-family: "firacode", monospace;

I’m happy with these small changes, and using a theme I develop myself (based on another theme), gives me the freedom to make these changes when I want to.
