Craving Coffee 01 - Is Personal Blogging Back?

I wanted to start by saying thank you for subscribing to Craving Coffee. I still don’t really know what I’m going to use this newsletter for, but it will be fun learning along the way, don’t you think?

Today I wanted to spend some time to talk about personal blogging and whether it is, in fact, dead. So go grab yourself a coffee, beer, wine, whisky, juice or whatever and let’s dive in, shall we?

Is personal blogging back?

When social networks came about, the glorious days of awful looking personal blogs seems to die as quickly as MySpace et al grew. And for a few years there, it wasn’t very common for people to have a personal blog. Heck, it still isn’t. Instead people seem to opt for sharing their thoughts on platforms like Twitter.

I feel like the tides of change are inbound and people are starting to hunt for their own space to share their thoughts. If you look at this post by Max Böck, he says:

It might just be my IndieWeb filter bubble talking, but I think there is a renewed interest in personal websites. A lot of big social media giants are falling out of favor, and it becomes cool again to own a space on the web rather than being one of a billion usernames.

I agree with Max completely - many of us are sick of social networks harvesting our data so they can make a profit. Generally people are also becoming more privacy savvy, which is also having an impact, I think.

Add to that the fact that it’s incredibly easy to start your own blog, there’s no real excuse not to do it. Which is why I think we’re seeing this resurgence of personal blogs.

Henrique Dias has taken things one step further and gone full 90s on his blog - complete with animate GIFs and all. I love it!

I’ll end this little thought of mine with a superb essay from Parimal Satyal, Rediscovering the Small Web (seriously, if you get 10 minutes, you should read this post). Like Henrique, Parimal has taken their blog back to the 90s and his post takes a nostalgic trip down the amazing early days of the Web where people were producing content within their own space purely because they could.

I love that personal blogging is having a resurgence; or so they seem to be at least. What do you think? Is personal blogging coming back, or am I just in a personal blogging bubble?

If you want to chat with me about personal blogging, feel free to reply to this email - I’d love to hear from you.

Updates & coming soon

I’ve been spending the last month or so re-designing my website. I ended up not changing all that much to be honest. You can read more about that here.

Besides updating some of my older content, I’m also working on a couple of posts that may be of interest to some of you. One is a guide on writing an IndieWeb profile for your website, and the other is some of my thoughts about what features a good blog should include in its design.

So keep an eye out for those posts being published over the next few weeks. For now I think I’ve taken enough of your time, so I will leave this edition of Craving Coffee here.

If you have any feedback for me on the direction I’m going with this thing, or if you want to talk more about personal blogging, please do reply to this email - as British Telecom once said… it’s good to talk.

I don't have comments on this site as they're difficult to manage and take up too much time. I'd rather concentrate on producing content than managing comments.
